How to Get the Right Fit for Your Boat Cover

When choosing a boat cover, fit is an important consideration. If you plan on using your cover only when storing your boat, either dry or moored, a precise fit isn’t a top priority. However, if you’re using the cover while transporting your boat, you’ll need a more precise fit to ensure that the cover won’t flap or rub in transit, reducing the cover’s life and causing possible damage to your boat’s finish.

There are two major components involved in getting the right fit for your boat cover:

Selecting the right type of cover

The general fit of your boat cover will be determined by the type of style you select, Universal, Semi-custom or Custom boat cover (See our Boat Cover Basics Guide to determine which style most suits your needs).

Measuring your boat accurately

Once you have decided upon a cover style, you will need to measure your boat accurately. For the best fit, we recommend that you actually measure your boat rather than relying on the boat’s literature. For a universal or semi-custom boat cover, you will need to know the length and beam of your boat. The diagram below shows you how to take these measurements. Remember, to get an accurate measurement, it is important to measure in a straight line, not up over the windscreen or other fixtures.

To measure the length: Measure from the point of the bow to the center of the transom.

To measure the beam width:
Measure the width at the widest part of your boat.

Note: Measure in a straight line, not up over the windscreen or other fixtures as you will get an incorrect measurement.
