  • Universal Boat Cover–Most Affordable Option -

If you do not need a form-fitting cover, then a universal boat cover or tarp may be your best choice. Semi-custom boat covers are designed to fit various styles of boats such as bass boats, deck boats, runabouts, and tournament ski boats, etc. Semi-custom covers have a moderate fit, with additional material to accommodate accessories or small size differences between makes and models. While the fit is not a precise as a fully custom boat cover, they are typically more affordable and more readily available. Choosing a semi-custom boat cover makes sense if you plan to trailer, store, or moor your boat. >> Use our Boat Cover Finder

Getting the Right Fit for Your Boat Cover

Choosing a boat cover that fits properly is an essential step in protecting your boat. The steps are easy, and can be accomplished with an everyday tape measure. Simply measure your boat’s beam (the maximum width) in a straight line. Repeat the process for the centerline from bow to stern, including extensions such as a bow pulpit or swim platform. Again, measure in a straight line, not up and over equipment or accessories. for more information, see "Choosing a Boat Cover That Fits Your Boat and Needs."

The Right Boat Cover Material

Polyester, poly-cotton blend, and polyester-canvas are typically among the most popular materials when choosing aboat cover. Polyester is favored by many, as it is waterproof and does not stretch or shrink. Cotton or cotton-canvas blends are less expensive and the natural cotton fiber breathes, keeping moisture from being trapped under the cover. However, it isn’t waterproof, and can be more prone to mildew and rot. In addition, cotton based covers can stretch or breakdown over time. The best cover will withstand all weather extremes in your location, including humidity and the damaging effects of UV rays in sub-tropic locations like Florida. Although choosing a boat cover made of the right material may not be high on your list, it should be. For more information read "Selecting the Right Boat Cover Material for Your Needs."

Caring for Your Boat Cover

To extend the life of your cover you should periodically wash down the fabric with mild soap and water, then rinse it with a garden hose.

"One of the most important things you can do to extend the life of your cover is to keep it pulled as tight as possible," says Keith Wineland, of BoaterSports, Inc., Manufacturers of the BoaterSports line of boat covers. "Never allow the cover to sag and let water collect in pockets. These will cause leaks in short order and destroy the integrity of the cover." Adding a proper system of supports and tie-downs will keep your cover in place and create a surface that will drain, and shed snow and debris.

When not using your cover for boat, store it in a bag. They are inexpensive, and will extend the life of your cover. For more information on caring for your boat cover review "Essentials of Boat Cover Care."
