Boat Cover Basics – Protecting Your Investment

The elements can take quite a toll on your boat’s finish and upholstery. Rain, hail, UV rays, soot, road grime, mildew, sand, salt and other damaging effects can wreak havoc on a boat. Even a year or two of exposure to the elements can cause serious oxidation of fiberglass, paint and metal surfaces, and lead to the degradation of plastic, rubber and upholstery. A smart, inexpensive way to protect your boat is a with a proper boat cover that is designed to meet your boating needs and the seasonal variations of weather. No matter what style of boat you own, the right boat cover will extend the life of your boat and protect your investment.

Choosing the Right Boat Cover
So how do you decide which boat cover is right or your boat? It depends on if you plan on storing, mooring or trailering your boat, the type of materials and fit you want. Boat covers come in three fit options: Universal, Semi-custom and Custom.

Universal Boat Cover
Sometimes referred to as shower cap boat covers, universal covers are best suited for boats that need protection from the elements only while mooring or in storage. A looser, non-form-fitting cover (or tarp), they are designed to protect a wide range of boat shapes and sizes, and are typically the least expensive boat cover option.

Semi-Custom Boat Cover
Designed to fit a wide variety of boat styles such as bass boats, deck boats, runabouts, and tournament ski boats, semi-custom covers have a moderate fit, with additional material to accommodate accessories or small size differences between makes and models. Semi-custom covers are a good choice if you plan to trailer, store or moor your boat. While the fit is not as precise as a Custom boat cover, they are usually more affordable and readily available.

Custom Boat Cover
Designed for the specific year, make and model of your boat, custom boat covers come in two types – snap-on and tie–down. The custom cover accommodates the boat's size, shape, and options, with a variety of reinforcements. Choosing a custom boat cover will provide the best fit for your boat, but you’ll pay a little more for the precision. If you plan to use it while trailering, storing, or mooring your boat, a custom cover is a great choice.
